I never really got the whole standing on a street corner just shot shot shot or walking in the opposite way of people traffic and just firing away. Putting a camera in someone face and shooting. What is that anyway? To me it’s being lazy. Maybe it’s an adrenaline rush and that makes you think your a great photographer. I tried it and it is just boring and needs no skill. Anyway, good video and every “street photographer” needs to hear this.
Why don't we have nowadays superb photographies like those made by Cartier-Bresson and other ones? We have now very fast focusing cameras, digital cameras, Photoshop, etc. But I never see story telling photographies, with no composition, but only street images with people walking. Old style photographers had rudimentary cameras but their works are superb.
Ur a beast Mott! Did you ever find a decent cup of coffee? BTW, let me know next time ur doing this so I can get in on the life insurance with ur misses 😂
This really does make sense to me, and it’s hard to put into words, but you explained it well. ☺ Street photography, whether documentary, journalism, or reportage, opens up so many conversations. Some street photographers love playing with geometry and harsh contrasts in black and white, as you described, while others capture a scene without worrying about aesthetics, simply showing what’s in front of them. However, a great street photographer does more: they capture the moment well and leave you with more than just a depiction of the scene, evoking some kind of emotion or feeling.
Guilty as charged! Slowly improving in this dept though 😂
Will this be the start of One Bike One Leica series? 😊
If my wife had any interest in cycling it could be, but she’s not into it George :(, and I don’t want to marry Chris.
Enjoyed the video but that looks downright miserable.
It was a lot of fun actually .
God that was powerful
I like to edit my photos and then sit on them, so to speak, for a few days or even weeks. That way, I can look at the photos with somewhat fresh eyes. I'll whittle down 30 or 40 shots to two or three and put the rest on the back burner.
May I ask how the selling process' logistics if you use White Wall? you get an order, collect the money and then go to your account in WhiteWall to place the print order with the shipping address the customer has provided? TYIA
Your video was really good. It drove home sensible stuff that made sense to me, being a journalist myself (print). That noted - and this sounds too self-absorbed - I've enough people look at my amateur photography (not only friends) say make a website. So I'm going to do it. I'm checking out Squarespace, Wix and Pixpa.
Thanks for sharing Justin!
I totally agree with you. I began as a photojournalist, then moved into other areas of photography-- wedding photography, portraits, grad. seniors, models, etc. And I don't claim to be a "street photographer," however, on occasion I like to take a day or two and walk the streets doing street photography. My success ratio is extremely low because I want emotion in my photos. I want the image to convey something to the viewer other than, like you said, "oh, that's a good image." And because of my standards it's hard to get a good street shot. I do get them, and I'm pleased when I do. Some of my images are printed in b&w and some in color. The street photography I see on UA-cam is extremely pedestrian, no soul, no meaning, usually a person captured in shadow or light walking in shadow or light, etc. Means nothing. Good street photography, to me, has to convey emotion. I think it's the photojournalist still in me that demands that. Anyway, you made some excellent points. I hope all the so-called street photographers on UA-cam watch your video.
Good analysis. I'm considering buying this Mac now for my photo edits. I think it has remained at a very good price and continues to give good results compared to the current M3. Thanks for the honest analysis. Greetings from Spain
"Ra, ra, ramble on." LZ
Good rant! So tired of seeing photos of strangers walking in Tokyo. So who is actually leading the way in creative street photography???
I think it has a lot to do with most people aren’t living in reality. People used to interact in public and now so much is just people walking around on their phones. The subjects are soulless and it comes thru in the photography.
I use it for film and it's fabulous. Run it on usb c battery. No filmmaker ever uses autofocus.
Had a Nikon D3s stolen from a tatty Domke whilst my feet were resting on the bag on an overnight train in India when I was on assignment there once.
Thanks Justin That was a perfect blend of great photos and interesting commentary. Hope you get all the assignments you want
Thank you John :)
Funny boy
At least Pepsi ads are aesthetically pleasing. When does the grift of selling gear, selling presets or selling your "online classes" stop pretending to have anything to do with "photography"?
Have a wonderful day.

I've realized it long time ago that GOOD street photography is HARD. Pedestrians stepping from a shadow area into the ray of light, reflections, abstractions, juxtapositions... or wait - my "favourite" - shots through window glass of people sitting in the café or on the bus (I've done it myself :) I believe that good street photography should be PROJECT or THEME based. Then it has a chance to be interesting and potential successful in some way.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts Rostyk.
I don't always agree with you Justin, but this time I do 100% too many signage shots, balloon 🎈 head shots, no real decisive moments... Which was the very thing Street photography was based on. Unfortunately in my opinion people like Matt Day are the problem here, UA-camrs that promote a very boring set of work... Who in the real world would not be recognised as a great photographer.... So go figure, I do like Matt and his videos just not the photography. P.s I'm young..ish.
I appreciate your input here but I can’t possibly fathom why you don’t always agree me as I’m always right :). Ok, kidding , I’m fine w that , just giving out my opinion here from my experience and I welcome other thoughts here as well. I like Matt Day’s channel for reviews sometimes but I’m not too familiar with his photography but I will agree with you that the majority of the popular street photography and gear review channels are pretty subpar photography in my opinion. So many will tell me it’s subjective and blah blah but I don’t think that’s the case some work is just simply objectively average or below and most of it has little visual soul but people who don’t know any better just think it’s good because they have a popular channel or an affiliation w a camera company that cares more about their audience numbers than it does about the quality of their photography. I’m just trying to show people another way , whoever is willing to listen to me :).

[0:05] 😠 The speaker is critical of current trends in street photography, finding them repetitive and lacking journalistic depth. [0:29] 📸 Street photography often focuses on aesthetic formulas like high contrast black and white or ironic juxtapositions, which the speaker finds cliché. [2:08] 🎞 Legendary street photographers like Elliot Erwitt are praised for injecting emotion and soul into their work, a quality the speaker believes is missing in contemporary street photography. [3:07] 🔄 The speaker urges photographers to break away from formulaic approaches and instead find their own unique style and purpose in their photography. [5:32] 🌟 Photography should aim to show viewers something new or familiar in a fresh way, a principle the speaker believes is often overlooked in current street photography trends.
As an avid Canon user, it feels like everything is made for two reasons: make money and make videos. They are constantly making upgrades so they can make videos better. I just make photos, I have a 35mm lens on my Canon RP and that’s what I use daily. Why cause Canon felt the best in my hands when I started. In my time of making photos, and posting to social media - the Canon brand has interacted with me once and even that felt like PR. I want to be able to talk photography, not just gear but everything and it seems like Leica as a brand wants to keep photography alive. Now will I switch, no cause I don’t have that type of money.
Thanks so much for giving this wisdom reach advice for free. Anyone who help to future proof your life really really care. I have always love product photography and went all out last year December preparing to go into it and then after much thought and picking a few tools for it, I sat down to reflect on the entire industry, technology evolution and its impact on photography even more with the advent of AI and realize there is no future for product photography so I decided I will pivot towards portrait photography for parents with mature family as I see an opportunity in it in my country and it’s looking good already. Thanks for helping to sharpen my perspective on things. 👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾
Thanks for the video! Is it true, as a general rule, that if I want to sell prints I should keep my images withing the "standard" aspect ratios to make it easier with framing etc?
You are very wise! Great advice for any entrepreneur in any field. Thank you for the kick in the butt!
Thanks Burt :)
+1 on this.
Thanks Erik.
Looks like the MP LHSA Hammertone.
Ugh. So much want for a Monochrom M!
Hey Justin, love the straight up honesty and energy of your videos. Wondering what strap you have on that Q3. Thanks!
Thanks for the bag rec, was in the new market for a new one, after a couple weeks of looking around at different brands, went with the Pilot V2, looks to be super high quality.
Glad you like it Joey, what size did you go with?
@@AskMOTT 18l backpack
Thanks, just ordered the Pilot 3.5L and pre-ordered the new Pilot 7L in black. Don't spend all that affiliate link money in one place now....
I’m on my yacht silky champagne as I read this , thanks Gerry :). Hope you like the bags , keep me posted on your thoughts after some time with them. I love the whole collection.
@@AskMOTT Will do. Cheers!
My Combo currently is Leica Q2 and Leica SL (601). On the SL, I use M lens and a Leica SL 24-90. I think these two camera complement each other well. The digital view finder is what drives my combo. The Leica SL is still a phenomenal camera. I may upgrade the SL to a used SL2 at some point because of the image stabilization.
I have lenses the drop to 1.4 and I rarely use it due to shooting I studio mostly but I have to get outdoors more and really push what my lens are built for 😂 I mainly shoot around F8 generally but that's just because the situation requires that
Very interesting take. As a relatively new photographer I am already finding I can spot these sort of cliched photos, but I suppose like all the other composition 'rules', you need to know what the conventions are in order to know how and when to break them. Also it is worth saying that sometimes a conventional 'cliched' photo just somehow works ...
I shoot cityscape type work around a big city .. and I've come to really love fast lenses for it. There's a certain feel to isolating "chunks" of a setting that reminds me of medium format portraiture and such. The touch of character also gives the setting a bit of dreaminess that I really like. Just my two cents, as someone who doesn't just blow out the BG/FG with them (I mean, sometimes!).
I shoot with them. I like bright and cheery.
Looking for feedback - I have just got a Leica Q3 & I'm looking very closely at the 2litre version.. plus spare battery and SD card case..... Any help or advice much appreciated - Thanks
DOF and blurring the background when justified.
He wouldn't have got the opportunity but for the fact that he is Beckham's son. There are many highly talented photographers who would love to have this privilege. The fact that he's packed in shooting, shows that it was merely a fad.
It's crazy that this video came up on my feed because I just saw the rhino photo on Instagram today! Awesome photo 🙌
Thanks Alex :)
Bit strange to interrogate song lyrics of all things from a purely literal view. Not like it could be a metaphor for anything at all.
Isn't it dangerous to walk around with that m body and summilux combo ? I'd also like to explore this part of the world...
Hanoi is an extremely safe city.
Iv got to agree there is nothing new people are to set on following the rules
Love this post, the images tell a great story
